Leicestershire Cup Final

Lutterworth   17pts   v  Market Bosworth 7pts

COUNTY CUP SUCCESS !!

To win the County Cup again is a great credit to the whole squad and the coaches for the work they have put into their playing this season. What looks like a glorious result, however, did not feel like a glorious game at the time. It was a hard struggle against old rivals and Bosworth had evidently planned their tactics to suit. Their forwards were a strong pack, with individuals among them prepared to pick up the ball and charge ahead, even if to gain only a few yards. Their backs were quick to come forward to block Lutterworth manoeuvres and also capable of swift passing.

Indeed the first try of the game came when Bosworth passes across the field ended in a knock-on which David Williams snatched and dashed down the wing. George Fossey's conversion from this angle was remarkable. Bosworth maintained their pressure into the Lutterworth end of the field throughout this half. Passing across the field one time gained them some ground, further advanced by the forwards in a ruck, and then the chance to make a dash on the blind side to score near the touch line. Another remarkable conversion brought the scores even, which they remained well into the second half. Then for once the Lutterworth passing game showed, with David Williams gaining ground in the centre and off-loading to Charlie Thacker, who touched down a try right under the posts, easy for George Fossey to convert.

The final try, a similar one, again touched down by Charlie, made the result certain. All through the game, however, the Lutterworth forwards were in difficulties, seldom winning possession in set scrums or getting the ball out quickly to take advantage of the Lutterworth passing game. Likewise the backs seldom had the room to shew their usual fluidity before being confronted by Bosworth defenders. As a result there were times when David Williams, rather than passing the ball out, was trapped into darting about looking himself for the gap. George Fossey too was prevented from controlling the game from the back and one of his vital clearance kicks was blocked. Usually it has taken the challenge from a good opposing team to bring out the best in the Lutterworth side. Today, however, they were faced by the most competent team that they have tackled this season and were actually prevented from showing off their best play. It is therefore all the more credit to their hard work and determined defence that they emerged with a convincing win.
