RFU National Colts Plate

Northampton Old Scouts 0pts  v  Lutterworth 43pts

Sullivan hat trick as Lutts stun Old Scouts!

Lutterworth travelled to Northampton Old Scouts to play their 3 times cancelled 3rd round match, in the RFU Colts National Plate Trophy. And it was certainly worth the long wait as their awesome set of forwards totally dominated, to help drive the team to a stunning 43-0 win.

In a one way first half Lutts out scored the home side 4 to nil with a brace each from Joe Sullivan and Callum McDougall. Sullivan’s first score came on the back of a James Lloyd tackle and Simon Johnson’s quick hands, as he finished off by crashing his way over. His second was down to a quick passing move between Ben Stone and Barney Barker, before he spun out of a tackle and paced his way through the gap he had created. McDougall finished off two lovely forward drives, which could have come straight out of the Leicester Tigers text book. Neil Back would have been proud of him! James Lloyd converted the last score to take the visitors in 22-0 ahead.

It was all Lutterworth in the 2nd half but this young Northampton side defended their hearts out, restricting Lutts to only one more score, until the final 10 minutes. That first score of the half came from the predicable hands of Joe Sullivan, who makes a habit of scoring hat tricks! Great work by Johnson and Jon Wright created the space for Sullivan to take the ball at speed and race into the corner. As the home side tired from the relentless pressure, the pounding on their scrum finally succumbed to infringing and giving away the inevitable penalty try. The last try of the game came in the final two minutes as Old Scouts were ironically camped on the Lutterworth line and looking like scoring a try that their efforts deserved. However great anticipation by Luke Ball saw him intercept the final pass and run the entire length of the pitch, to touch down between the posts. Ball converted two of the kicks and Lloyd the other, to make the final score 43-0 to Lutterworth.

Head Coach Steve Dillow said “what a fantastic performance from the boys; I was especially pleased with our powerful set of forwards. Despite the frustration of cancelled games due to snow, they have continued to train in the snow and their hard work was well rewarded on the pitch today. Their commitment was typified by hooker George Hargreaves, who when coming off with a serious blood injury, still had a huge smile on his face! Who’d be a front row player?”

The draw for the next round has been made and this coming Saturday, Lutterworth will l visit local rivals Syston, for what should be another epic National Plate encounter (kick off 02:15 PM).
