League Game

Peterborough Lions 27pts  v  Lutterworth  21pts

The visitors were up against it right from the start against a very big and powerful Peterborough side. They went behind after early pressure and some poor tackling to let the home side crash over for a converted try after 5 minutes. Lutterworth then seemed to wake up and started to counter attack with some purpose living off scraps of possession, which was rewarded by a converted penalty coolly taken by Robin eager, who then missed a more difficult one after 17 minutes. Lutterworth continued to live off scraps and set up a lovely counter attack started by Warren Tebb who broke through to pass to Tom Goldsworthy. Tom took the ball on and gave a try making pass to Jo Ball who ran the length of the field to score, which was converted by Eager making the score 7-10. Unfortunately a lapse in concentration led to them giving away a penalty which was converted just before half time.

Half-time:            10-10

The second half started just the same with the home side powering over for a try after some lack lustre tackling, which again was converted. Lutterworth then shored up their defences and held firm until the 65th minute when the home side went ahead 22-10 with another try which was unconverted. Lutterworth undeterred then had their best period of the game with strong tackling and counter attacks. These were rewarded with two penalties from Eager, and an individual effort by number 9 Dan Ford who chipped through, and collected his own kick to go over for a try making the score 22-21 and Lutterworth looked as though they could snatch victory. Unfortunately, the home side’s forward strength resulted in them getting a push over try in the dying moments.

Final score:            27-21

Ben King deserves a special mention for filling the tight head Prop position after an absence of ten years from 1st team rugby, and Matthew Randle for his tireless contribution against all the odds.
