League Game
Lutterworth 30pts v Peterborough Lions 21pts
Lutterworth always looked the better team and although Peterborough briefly took the lead fifteen minutes from the end of the game Lutterworth came back strongly with two more tries to take a thoroughly deserved victory.
Peterborough had started the season with two wins from two and after Lutterworth’s unexpected loss last week to O.Newtonians there was concern about mounting a sustainable league challenge.
The win was built on a pack that dominated all aspects apart from the line-out. At times mauls were driven 30-40 metres giving the Lions all sorts of problems in defence. That Peterborough remained in the game was due to some good running from their winger and a reliable kicker who converted one of their two tries and three penalties.
The whole Lutterworth pack deserve credit but Rob Sands was outstanding for his work in the loose but especially for his ball carrying in open play when he showed some unexpected pace by catching a Peterborough drop-out and scoring directly in the corner. Dave Stannard was always prominent with strong runs from the base of the scrum one of which gave him his try. The backs often showed penetration with good play from fly-half Aaron Dann, strong running from centre Tom Goldsworth and intelligent play from winger Phil Daffern which brought him two tries.
Lutterworth’s other try was scored by skipper, Paul Riley from yet another driving maul. Winger Dan Ford converted one of Lutterworth’s five tries and one penalty.
