Intermediate Cup Round 2

Old Coventrians 27pts  v  Lutterworth   28pts

Lutterworth travelled to Coventry with a young side containing several lst XV debutants in James Lloyd, Simon Johnson, Warren Tebb and Joe Sullivan from last year’s Colts side and came away with a narrow win in a hard fought contest.

The Coventry side took an early lead with a penalty followed shortly by an unconverted try to give them an 8-0 lead. Lutterworth fought back but missed the chance to claw back three points with a penalty. Strong pressure led to a fine try by  centre Tom Goldsworthy, converted by Williams to reduce the hosts’ lead to a single point. Williams slotted a penalty shortly afterwards to give Lutterworth the lead by 10 points to 8. In an eventful few minutes before half time, Old Coventrians scored two tries, one of them converted. Lutterworth’s only response was another Williams penalty and the sides changed ends with the home side leading by 20-13.

Almost from the restart, Lutterworth conceded a soft try which was converted to give the Coventry side a cushion at 27-13. Lutterworth refused to panic and soon full-back Chris Stanley was over for a try converted by Williams and Lutterworth were back in contention at 27-20. Lutterworth were quickly back in their opponents’ 22 metre zone again and a kick and chase by Stanley led to his second try which was unconverted to leave the match in the balance at 27-25. With ten minutes to go, Lutterworth were awarded a penalty on the 22. Skipper Paul Riley opted for the kick at goal which Williams converted to points to give Lutterworth the slenderest of leads at 27-28. In spite of frantic efforts by the hosts, Lutterworth’s defence held out and the game finished with Lutterworth the single point ahead to keep the dream of a trip to Twickenham alive.

Afterwards coach Nick Hutt congratulated his young team on a fine performance that enhanced the reputation of many players including  Man of the Match Joe Sullivan.

Next Saturday 31st,  Lutterworth’s lst XV are back on the league trail travelling to Banbury for an earlier kick-off at 2.30pm
