National Cup - Round 1
Lutterworth 9pts V Market Bosworth 0pts
Lutterworth Colts welcomed tough opposition in the shape of Market Bosworth on Saturday for the first round of the National Colts Cup and ran out deserved 9-0 winners in a classic contest, despite the lack of tries.
Lutts started the stronger as two attacks were repelled before a penalty was awarded to the home side, due to holding on by Bosworth. Luke Ball took the kick but narrowly missed in windy conditions. Minutes later Lutts were once again awarded a penalty which Ball duly converted. Lutterworth’s hard graft was not being rewarded with a try but inevitably the pressure led to another Bosworth infringement, giving them a penalty which was easily kicked by Ball again, leaving it 6-0 at half time.
The tone for the second half was set when Lutterworth back row Simon Johnson made a superb tackle on the Bosworth forward, who caught the ball from the Lutts restart. As if inspired by that, the home side pressed forward for the score to put the game beyond Bosworth. Both sides swopped penalty misses through Ball and Joe Rumkin, before Ball made it a hat trick of successful penalty kicks as he slotted over to make it 9-0 at the close. Lutts now face a long trip to Scunthorpe for the 2nd round, on Sunday 19th October (kick off 2.00PM) after they beat Oundle 10-0 in there 1st round encounter.
Head Coach David Johnson said “a fantastic improvement on the Syston match. We dominated the game from start to finish and just never let this powerful Market Bosworth side play. We tackled everything that moved and with a little more luck would have scored a couple of tries”.
Lutterworth Colts travel to Leicester Forest next Saturday (3.00 PM kick), for game 4 of the Leicestershire Colts League.
