Lutts miss out in National Cup classic.

Lutterworth Colts welcomed Syston to Ashby Lane on Saturday for the 4th round of the RFU National Cup. It was an excellent game, played in front of a big crowd but it was Syston who won the day with a 15-10 win.

Looks took an early lead through a Robin Eager drop goal but were soon pegged back when lively winger James Goode scored for the visitors. He won a kick and chase as he disrupted the defence to touch down, with David Torr converting the kick. Lutts had an immediate chance to reply but the penalty was narrowly missed. Straight from the Syston drop out Lutterworth responded when Aaron Dann crossed the line. The ball was caught by Dan Holmes who then put a lovely pop pass for Dann, to take the ball at speed and race his way through and touch down between the posts. Eager converted from in front of the posts to make it 10-7 to Lutts at half time.

It was all square as Syston kicked an early penalty through Torr to make it 10-10. The next score was always going to be telling and so it proved as Syston crossed the line to extend the lead. Goode scored his second as the high ball was kicked over the defensive line and he won the race to the ball to score in the corner. The kick was missed leaving the outcome of the tie on a knife edge. From here on in it was all Lutterworth, with the visitors holding out despite some fantastic breaks by the home side. As time ticked by, Lutts were restricted to running the ball from deep in their own territory but the strong Syston defence held on for a well deserved 15-10 win.

Head Coach David Johnson said “a great game of rugby played by two quality sides. Man for man there is nothing to choose between these two sides but Syston played better as a unit and they were worthy winners today. Well done both sides for a lovely game of rugby and we wish Chris Tresler and his squad good luck for the rest of the competition”.

These two sides meet again on Saturday as Lutts travel to Syston for a Colts League encounter (kick off 2.15).
