Sunday 19th October 2008

National Cup Round 2

Scunthorpe  5pts  V  Lutterworth  37pts

Lutterworth Colts, along with Club President Martyn Holmes and over 30 travelling supporters, boarded a double decker bus to make the long journey to Scunthorpe, to meet tough opposition in the shape of Scunthorpe on Sunday for the 2nd round of the RFU National Colts Cup. In a wind affected game they ran out well deserved 37-5 winners.

Scunthorpe started the quicker as they won a line out close to the Lutterworth line. The ball was moved to Chris Hewitt who burrowed his way through for the opening score. This stung Lutts into action and after a number of attacks which came close to scoring the pressure told on the home side as a long pass, deep in their own territory was cleverly intercepted by Robin Eager, who raced in and dived over at the side of the posts. Eager also converted his try, leaving it 7-5 at half time.

Lutts turned round with the wind now at their backs and a quality kicking game made better use of the conditions. They were keen to get the points on the board and were awarded 4 penalties in quick succession. Luke Ball converted two of them to put the visitors 8 points in front. They now began to pile on the pressure and the defence were forced into an error as Mike Hill pounced on a loose kick, making great ground before slipping the ball through for Joe Sullivan to crash over. Hill then claimed a try of his own as Ball put him through to pace in from 35 metres out. Lovely hands from a lively Luke Ball then enable Simon Johnson to crash through for try number 4, with Ball successfully converting those last two scores. The final try came as a well executed box kick by scrum half James Lloyd was well chased by Ball, who touched down to make it 37-5 at the close.

Head Coach David Johnson said “an excellent performance that made all the travelling supporters extremely proud. We played the windy conditions brilliantly and after the early scare, Scunthorpe never looked like scoring again, as we dominated most areas of the pitch and scored some lovely, quality tries. And our thanks go to Scunthorpe for being such great hosts”.

Lutterworth Colts travel to unbeaten Hinckley next Saturday (3.00 PM kick), for game 5 of the Leicestershire Colts League.
