COLTS TEAM Match Report
Saturday 17th January 2009
Hinckley 15pts v Lutterworth 20pts
Lutterworth Colts nearly found themselves without a game this Saturday and with a big Cup tie at home to Syston next week they were desperate for a game to help prepare. Luckily they picked up the toughest of games in the shape of unbeaten Hinckley and proceeded to dominate play and run out deserved 20-15 winners, against the current league leaders.
Hinckley opened the scoring through a Chris Cooke penalty before the visitors camped in their half for a 15 minute spell, missing 4 penalties of there own in the windy conditions. Just when it looked like all the Lutts pressure was to leave them without a score, they put some points on the board. It came when an attempted Hinckley clearance was brilliantly blocked and charged down by Simon Johnson. Dan Holmes won the chase to the ball and touched down to give Lutts the lead. Robin Eager stepped up to convert the score and make it 7-3 to Lutts. With minutes to go to half time, Lutterworth further extended the lead when great hands saw the ball moved out to Tom Goldsworthy. He made a lovely, jinking run down the wing to touch down in the corner and make it 12-3 at half time.
Hinckley now had the benefit of the wind but it took an early Lutts penalty through Eager to finally kick start the home side. Lutts then held up three phases of driving from the big Hinckley forward pack before Kyle Miller finally burrowed his way through to score from a few metres out. Cooke converted the kick. Lutterworth continued to defend well and were again able to extend the lead further with a score which was to be the try of the match. A lovely passing sequence between Eager and Greg Kirkby led to a pass out to Goldsworthy. He hit the ball at speed to race in from the 22 and finish off a lovely team try. Hinckley then showed why they had held this fantastic unbeaten record all season by nearly staging a late comeback. Quick hands saw the ball moved out to Cooke, who crossed the line to get the home side to within 5 points. The kick was missed and the whistle was blown for an excellent 20-15 win to Lutterworth.
Head Coach Dave Johnson said “This was a brilliant game to help prepare us for the Syston cup game next week, as they don’t come any bigger than Leicestershire’s current form side. The score didn’t do us justice as despite dominating possession we failed to convert this into points. It leaves us plenty to be pleased with but also plenty to work on in training”.
Lutterworth and Syston lock horns next week in the first of 3 matches between the two sides over consecutive Saturday’s, when they meet at Ashby Lane in the 4th round of the RFU National Cup. Kick off is at 2.15 PM, so please come along to give your support in what should be a fantastic game.
