National Cup - Round 3

Lutterworth  17pts  V  Towcestrians 0pts

Lutts power into 4th round of National Cup.

Lutterworth Colts produced their best game of the season as they overcame a tough Towcestrians side at home on Saturday, in a classic RFU National Cup 3rd round tie. They dominated the first half and defended their hearts out in the second half to run out 17-10 winners at the close.

Lutts started with the wind at their backs and they used it well as they raced into a two try lead. Try one came as scrum half James Lloyd kicked over the defensive line for Luke Ball to win the race to the ball, read the bounce and dive over the line. Robin Eager kicked the conversion. Lutterworth continued the pressure, narrowly missing two penalty attempts before Towcester then came back into the game near the end of the half, missing a penalty kick of their own before the home side extended their lead. It came through a great angled run by Tom Goldsworthy. He received the ball on the 10 metre line and paced his way in, to touch down in the corner. Eager again converted a superb kick from touch to make it 14-0 at half time.

Towcestrians now had the wind in their favour and they made the most of it, keeping Lutterworth pinned in their own half. Their determination to get back in the game was rewarded as a race for a high kick was won by their winger, who then had the simple job of dropping over the line. They continued to pound the Lutts line as the heavy rain arrived. Try two for the visitors finally came as a lovely passing sequence was finished off by a lively Green, in the corner. The difficult kick was missed leaving the game 14-10 to Lutts. Towcester threw everything at Lutterworth to get back into the game but a master class of brilliant tackling and defending kept them at bay. Lutts extended the lead to 7 points as Eager kicked a penalty, but this was still not enough to kill off the game. A powerful display, especially by the forward pack kept the visitors out to the final whistle, as Lutterworth celebrated an excellent 17-10 win.

Head Coach David Johnson said “an outstanding performance against the best side we’ve played this season. We scored two lovely tries as we dominated the first half and then Towcester showed their strength by throwing everything at us in the second half. Our forwards were awesome as they tackled everything that moved and overall I think we really deserved this fantastic win”.

Lutterworth Colts travel to Market Harborough next Saturday (2.15 PM kick), for game 6 of the Leicestershire Colts League.
