COLTS TEAM Match Report

League Game
Hinckley 22pts V Lutterworth 17pts
Lutterworth Colts came up against League leaders and unbeaten Hinckley on Saturday and both teams played out a classic encounter, the result of which remained in the balance up to the close. The score was locked at 14-14 with 5 minutes to go, before Hinckley finally ran out 22-17 winners.
Hinckley started the sharper and opened up a 14-6 lead at half time. They scored tries through Number 8 Alex Salt and lock Huw Marsden, with both scores being converted by Ryan Oakes. Lutts responded with two penalty kicks from Luke Ball, with the second of which was well kicked from 40 metres out, to make it 6-14 at the close of the half.
Another penalty kick from Ball narrowed the gap early in the second half, before Ball scored Lutts first try of the day. It came as lovely passing moved the ball out to Tom Goldsworthy, who made great ground before putting Ball through, to touch down in the corner. Crucially the difficult kick was missed leaving it tied at 14-14. It was all Lutts as they pushed for some points to take the lead. Ball narrowly missed a penalty before hitting a lovely drop kick which struck the post and agonisingly stayed out! As if stung by this scare, this powerful Hinckley side stepped up their game to steal it at the end with a try through Alex Norris and a penalty from Oakes. Lutts scored a late penalty kick through Ball, but Hinckley just played the remaining time out to register a fine 22-17 win and maintain their unbeaten record.
Head Coach Dave Johnson said I was so pleased the way the lads played against one of the best sides in the County. Despite losing 4 key players on the morning of the game, the boys stepped up to give the League leaders a major scare and with a little more luck we may have nicked it at the end.
Lutterworth Colts travel to Bedworth next Saturday for a friendly fixture (kick off 2.30 PM).
