League Game

Mkt Harborough 20pts  V  Lutterworth  29pts

Lutts Colts overcome spirited Harborough.

If Lutterworth Colts thought it was going to be an easy day at Market Harborough on Saturday then they were in for a shock. The home side matched Lutts for three quarters of the game, before the visitors finally ran out 29-20 winners.

Robin Eager slotted an early penalty for Lutterworth, before Luke Ball opened the try scoring. Lovely hands between Eager and James Cooke saw the ball shipped out to Ball, who cruised down the wing to score in the corner. The home side looked for a quick response and it came as Mark Harper paced through to touch down under the posts. Matt Gilbert converted to reduce the deficit to 1 pont. Harborough then took a shock lead as Gilbert was successful with a penalty kick, but this only served to stun Lutts into an immediate response. It came from quick recycled ball on the home sides 22, which was moved between 3 sets of hands before Simon Johnson powered his way through to touch down. Eager again converted the kick to make it 15-10 at the close of the half.

The half started with two penalties to each side but Gilberts was the only successful kick, to get the home side within 2 points of the visitors. Lutterworth finally took the game by the scruff of the neck as they scored two excellent tries. The first came as fly half Aaron Dann cleverly hacked on and won the race to touch down for a lovely score. The second came from a brilliant break by James Cooke. He was finally pulled down short of the line but the ball was quickly recycled and shipped out to Johnson who again powered through despite the three defenders hanging onto him! Eager successfully converted both kicks. Market Harborough showed their fighting spirit as they forced a consolation try in the last minute as lively winger Stuart Wright raced in to score under the posts. Gilbert kicked the conversion to make the final score 29-20 to Lutterworth.

Head Coach Dave Johnson said “We made hard work of it today and only had ourselves to blame for letting Harborough back into the game. But hats off to the home side who made it difficult for us and well done Lutts who dug deep to finally get the win they deserved”.

Lutterworth Colts welcome a tough Melton Mowbray RFC to Ashby Lane next Saturday for the 7th League game of the season (kick off 2.15 PM).
