League Match
Melton Mowbray U17 12pts v Lutterworth U17: 15pts
Lutterworth under 17’s visited a strong Melton Mowbray team and played out a classic encounter, which they eventually ran out 15-12 winners.
Lutterworth had most of the play in the first half, missing an early penalty and a couple of drop goals, before Greg Littlewood converted his 2nd penalty attempt to give the visitors an early lead. They continued to press and a great piece of individual skill from Will Keeling led to the first try. He picked up the ball on half way, before stepping is way past 3 defenders and then through the gap to race in and touch down under the posts. Littlewood converted this lovely try to give Lutts a deserved 10-0 advantage at half time.
Melton have built a reputation of being one of the best drilled sides in the league and it was no surprise when they scored, early into the 2nd half. The ball was moved through five sets of hands before lively winger Jordan Curtis broke through to touch down in the corner. The difficult kick was missed. Another lovely piece of individualism came in the shape of Captain Dan Holmes, who kicked from the halfway line and then won the chase to the ball. He tapped it back to Connor Smith who powered his way over the line, to score at the side of the posts. The kick was missed, leaving the door open for Melton. They took full advantage as they replied with a push over try by their forwards, with Carl Prior coming up with the ball. Curtis converted the difficult kick and set up an exciting last 5 minutes, but this strong Lutterworth defence held out from some heavy pressure to take the two points, with a excellent 15-12 win
Head Coach Chris Everard said “What a fantastic advert for rugby at this age group. This was one of the best games we’ve seen this season, with the result in doubt, right up to the last few seconds. Some great defence from both sides, but a couple of exciting tries from Lutterworth eventually swung the result in our favour”.
That result helped Lutterworth maintain their two points lead at the top of the League ahead of Syston and Vipers Their next game is on Tuesday 30th October at home to an Irish touring team in the shape of Newbridge College (kick off 7.30 AM).
