Under 17 Match Report

Sunday 18th Noveber 2007

Nuneaton 12pts  v  Lutterworth 17pts

Lutterworth win the battle of two County league leaders!

Lutterworth under 17’s were without a game this Sunday as Newark had to cancel late on, so they were very pleased to travel to meet Nuneaton in a hastily arranged friendly. This game brought together the leaders of the Leicestershire and Warwickshire u17’s Leagues, in a battle that Lutts eventually won 17-12.

Lutterworth had the majority of the possession in the first half but this powerful Nuneaton side held them at bay. That was until quick thinking by scrum half James Lloyd saw him put in a lovely kick through which was chased by fly half Luke Ball. He capitalised on poor handling by the home defence, to pick up and dive over the line. Ball also slotted the kick to give Lutts a 7-0 half time lead.

The home side came out for the second half with a little more attacking conviction and they were rewarded with an early score, thanks to their forwards who out drove the visitors. The kick was missed keeping Lutts two ahead as they marched back into Nuneaton territory and camped in their 22. A great bit of individual play saw flanker Simon Johnson brake off from a maul and power his way through and over the line. Crucially this kick was missed, leaving the door open for the home side. They took full advantage as a kick and chase was won and scored. The kick was converted taking the game into the final 5 minutes tied 12-12. Lutts then applied wave after wave of pressure as great kicking kept Nuneaton locked in their own 22. From the final lineout Lutts won the ball as captain and hooker Peter Rowe was brilliantly driven over the line to seal a fantastic game 17-12.

Head Coach Chris Everard said “What a fantastic game, played in atrocious conditions. With minutes to go it looked like a draw was in order but this Lutterworth side just don’t know when to give up. Well done to both sides for a superb game.”

Next Sunday 1st and 2nd in the under 17’s League face each other, as top of the table Lutterworth play Syston (11.00 AM kick off at Lutterworth).
