Under 17 Match Report

Sunday 17th February 2008

Towcestrians 10pts  v  Lutterworth 20pts

Lutterworth win tough encounter!

Lutterworth under 17’s travelled to Towcester on Sunday, to meet Towcestrians RFC, who came fresh from finishing runners up in the East Midlands under 17’s League Final.  A close game was on the cards as they entertained Leicestershire’s Champions and the big crowd were not disappointed as a great game saw Lutts run out 20-10 winners.

Lutts took control from the first minute when Greg Littlewood kicked a penalty from 35 metres out. This was followed up with a lovely try when great hands put Will Keeling into space. He made a lovely run before passing on to Littlewood who took the ball at speed before stepping the full back and touching down in the corner. Towcester were getting a little bit more of the ball, however they fell further behind when Keeling kicked over the defensive line. The ball ball was won by James Cooke, who kept moving forward before passing out to Keeling who dived over at the side of the posts. Littlewood converted to make it 15-0 to the visitors. The home side were stung into to action and great hands saw the ball passed from one wing to the other before reaching Josh Sawden, who dived through to reduce the deficit to 10. The kick was missed leaving it 15-5 to the visitors at half time.

Towcestrians carried on were they left off when they scored a second try 10 minutes into the second half as once again lovely hands saw the ball quickly moved out to the wing where Callum Jones forced his way over the line, into the corner. The teams then had a spell of 20 minutes were it was end to end, but both defences held out. In the last minute the home side tried to force a pass in their own half which was cleverly intercepted by James Cooke before he put in Liam Healy, who crossed into the corner to score his 2nd try in two weeks. The difficult kick was just narrowly missed to leave it  20-10 to Lutts at the close.

Head Coach Chris Everard said “we had a great first half, scoring a couple of lovely tries and we then showed some solid defending in the second half against a very powerful Towcestrians side. This was definitely a step up in quality and sets us up well for the two Cup competitions coming up over the next few weeks”.

Lutterworth will have a game on Sunday, with the opposition yet to be announced from the Fixture Pool.
