Under 17 Match Report
Sunday 13th April 2008
Lutterworth 32pts v Camp Hill 13pts
Lutterworth under 17’s welcomed new opposition in the shape of Solihull side Camp Hill. Both teams played out a thrilling game as Lutts ran out 32-13 winners.
Lutts were on fire as they raced into a 15-0 lead after only 10 minutes and in doing so they showed us an intensity that most sides would have struggled to keep up with. Try one came as the ball was passed out to Connor Smith. He raced down the wing but was pulled down just short of the line. Lovely hands saw the ball quickly moved along the line to the opposite wing were hooker Joe Sullivan forced his way over, in the corner. In a repeat of the first score, Greg Littlewood made a great run down the opposite wing but was tackled just short of the line. Captain Dan Holmes was on his shoulder to receive the popped pass and he dived over the line. Some lovely skill made try three as Smith again ripped through the Camp Hill defence before passing onto to Holmes. He dummied the full back before a cheeky overhead pass putt Littlewood in, to dive through and make it 15-0. It was testimony to this committed Camp Hill side that they regrouped and forced their way back into the game. Their big forward pack pounded the Lutts line and after three attempts they decided to switch it to the backs were winger Nic Powell showed his speed to jink his way over the line. It took a lovely cross field kick by Jack Edwards to open up Camp Hill again. Smith won the race to the ball and then proceeded to step past both defenders to finish off a lovely score and leave it 20-5 to Lutts at half time.
Coach Chris Everard had a large 27 man squad on duty today and was able to give every one a game as he made a number of changes at half time. Inevitably with these number of changes, it takes a few minutes to settle down and Camp Hill capitalised with an early score. It once again arrived in the shape of a busy Powell, who made a lovely jinking run to touch down and reduce the deficit. A Chris Kenny penalty made it 20-13 and an unlikely comeback by the visitors was now on the cards. The pressure was further applied as Lutts found themselves reduced to 14 men. Some awesome defence by Lutts kept Camp Hill out and then the 14 men had the audacity to score themselves! It came as a persistent Jack Edwards followed up a miss kicked clearance by Camp Hill, which struck there own player in the touch area. Edwards reacted first and pounced on the ball for a well earned score. Littlewood successfully converted. Restored to 15, Lutts then finished the game off with try number 6. Lovely hands by Littlewood, Josh McLaurin and Holmes, saw the ball reach Luke Ball out on the wing. He raced in to touch down in the corner and make it 32-13 to Lutts at the close.
Head Coach Chris Everard said “Lutts had a brilliant first half and I was really pleased with our all round play in this thrilling performance. We showed great commitment and defensive spirit, with some technical skills that make you proud and excited to watch rugby at this age group. Well done both sides for a really exciting game”.
Lutterworth entertain Doncaster on Sunday 20th April (Ashby Lane, kick off 11.30AM), in a game which may prove to be one of the most difficult of the season, against a very powerful squad.
