Under 17  Match Report

Sunday 11th November 2007

League Match

Vipers U17 0pts  v  Lutterworth U17: 17pts

Lutterworth under 17’s visited a strong Vipers team and they both played out a classic encounter, which Lutts eventually ran out 17-0 winners.

Lutterworth had most of the play in the first half, taking full advantage of the wind. They took a quick tap penalty 10 metres out which captain Dan Holmes made a lovely break, stepping past two defenders to touch down for the opening score. Holmes was unlucky with the kick as it hit the post and bounced out. The visitors continued the one way traffic and a Holmes break set up try number two. After making good ground Holmes passed out to Connor Smith, who raced in at pace to score. Holmes converted this lovely try to give Lutts a deserved 12-0 advantage at half time.

Vipers then used the wind well as they spent most of the 2nd half camped out in Lutts territory. For 15 minutes they attacked the Lutts line but some magnificent defence kept them out, time and time again. Eventually they received a penalty, which was narrowly missed.  Despite this disappointment Vipers continued to use a kicking game to gain territory     but this strong Lutterworth defence held out from the heavy pressure. It was from one of these long kicks into the Lutts half that the visitors scored their 3rd try. Liam Healy picked up and made some good ground before Holmes took it on. He committed the defender as he put a great pass onto Smith, who raced in down the wing to score in the corner to give Lutts an excellent 17-0 win.

Head Coach Chris Everard said “What a great game of rugby from two strong and passionate sides. It was a tale of two half’s as Lutterworth dominated the first 35 minutes and then defended their hearts out in the 2nd half. The last time we defended that well was in the East Midlands Championship in 2006. Well done to both sides, it really was the game of the season, so far”.

That result helped Lutterworth maintain their unbeaten run in the League and kept them in top spot. Their next game is on Sunday as they visit a strong Newark side for a friendly fixture (Kick off 11.00 AM at Newark)
