Under 17 Match Report

Sunday 9th April 2008

Leicestershire U17's   17pts  v  Lutterworth  29pts

Lutterworth beat the Counties best!

Lutterworth under 17’s travelled to Syston RFC to meet the Leicestershire County under 17’s side on Wednesday, in a development game set up to test the County select side against the current County Champions. An exciting game saw the County Champions running in as 29-17 winners.

Lutts took control early on with a lovely score from Jack Edwards. As the forwards were pushing towards the line the opposition scrum half found himself sucked in, leaving a gap for Edwards to pick up and dart through the gap and touch down. Luke Ball converted to give Lutts an early 7-0 lead. Leicestershire responded almost immediately as Matthew Fisher raced in down the wing, evading a Ball tackle to score in the corner. Lutterworth then proceeded to take control and were finally rewarded with a second try as a lovely switch between Ball and Connor Smith saw Smith make a lovely run as he powered over for the score. Ball once again converted the difficult kick. Try three was a classic as Edwards kicked forward, to turn the back line in its tracks. Andrew Pridding won the race to the ball, picking up brilliantly at pace, to touch down in the corner and make it 19-5 at half time.

Lutts continued to dominate and virtually put the result out of reach with a couple of early scores. Ball made a lovely individual run from half way only to be pulled down short of the line. Winger Joe Burnham was on his shoulder to receive the pass and dive over the line. The second came as a lovely cross field kick from Edwards was claimed by Smith. He once again beat the defender and powered over for his 2nd try of the night. Leicestershire’s 2nd came as they won line out ball and moved the ball on the Lutts 22 and quickly passed it onto Dan Holmes. He paced his way though the defensive line to pull one back. Matt Gilbert converted to make it 29-12. Leicestershire never gave up and it was them who had the last say as with seconds to go Louise Malt received a pass from a quick tap penalty and raced in down the wing to make it 29-17 to Lutts at the close.

Head Coach Chris Everard said “A great game of rugby from both sides. The Lutts lads worked hard against the Counties best and it was a brilliant team performance that finally ensured we took the spoils at the end. Lets hope this game becomes a permanent fixture in the future as it a great test for both sets of players”.

Lutterworth entertain new opposition in the shape of Solihull side Camp Hill on Sunday (Ashby Lane, kick off 10.30PM).
