Under 17 Match Report

League Match

Syston 18pts  v  Lutterworth 6pts

Syston stun the Champions!

Having clinched the under 17’s League last week, Lutterworth faced a difficult trip away to Syston, with an opportunity to remain unbeaten for the entire League season. However they came up against a very competitive team who had the motivation of trying to claim 2nd spot to spur them on and the better team won on the day as Syston ran out 18-6 winners.

In an even first 10 minutes the teams swapped penalties as Tom Collier converted for Syston and Luke Ball equalised for Lutterworth. The home side then started to take a grip on the game and Tom Murphy was dually rewarded with the first try of the day for Syston. The ball was well passed from wing to wing before Murphy touched down in the corner. The difficult kick was missed. Lutts responded almost immediately as Ball once again kicked a penalty, to make it 8-6 in the home sides favour. Syston again took control and managed to extend the lead just before half time. Some good handling skills saw the ball moved through 5 sets of hands before a lovely inter-passing sequence between Blake Tressler and the No 8 led to Tressler touching down between the posts to finish off a great team try, making it 13-6 to Syston at half time.

Lutterworth competed more in the second half, having most of the possession but were failing to capitalise on it. This was cruelly punished after a lovely run by the Syston full back saw the ball passed out to scrum half Stewart Cox, who touched down for a critical score, which virtually sealed the game for Syston. Lutterworth had the majority of the possession again in the last 10 minutes but try as they did  they were unable to break through this very well drilled Syston defence, which left it 18-6 to Syston at the close.

Coach Mike Rowe said “Syston deserved everything they got and as hard as Lutterworth grafted, it always looked like Syston had that extra edge, to take the game. We wish them luck in their task to finish in 2nd position and thank them for a great game today.”

Next week Lutts play a friendly against opponents yet to be decided from the pool and the latest results and league positions are shown below (Lutts have now completed all their League games, but some teams still have to re-arrange a number of postponed matches).
