Under 16 Match Report

Sunday 28th October 2007

Oadby Wyggs 18pts  v  Lutterworth 12pts

The weather was a bit grim, very blustery and a fine drizzle, that made the paper damp. We had the wind at our backs in the first half & Lutts were off to a great start in the first minute, with the ball bobbling about from kick off & Ewan chasing the ball over the try line & dropping on it to score. No conversion unfortunately, but the score board was Oadby Wyggs 0 Lutts 5. At the restart Ewan had another good run, ball lost but kicked on by Dan to just under posts but valiant effort by boys failed to get another quick try. We seemed to spend a lot of time camped on the opposition's 22, but still no points. Lutts won the ball from an OW line out & our winger took a run up the line, lost ball to OW's and Alex Dann made a great tackle in mid field & kicked ball long, strong winds carried the ball dead. All start again! The referee awarded OW a penalty for a high tackle!!! As if! And the ball was then kicked to the Lutts 22. Brilliant tackling by the lads but a missed knock on by the ref and a good strong backs move by Oadby Wyggs allowed their Thomas Kirken to crash over our try line. Conversion missed score now 5-5.

The re-start saw the ball go over the dead ball line and back to scrum OW ball. Lutts turned over the scrum & we were back on their 22 again, ball came down field & Leo made a brave effort to hold onto the ball & stay on his feet, it nearly worked but the ball was lost in the ruck. On the whole in the first half we seemed to be on top, but on the wrong side of the refereeing decisions!! Again we were camped on their 22, but the referee decided that OW deserved a penalty for a comment from our coaches. No further score, Half Time called. 2nd Half, rain has stopped but wind picked up & is against us this half. Good tackle by Goldy bundled their winger out into touch but ball stayed in to go to a Lutts scrum. Referee saw some infringement, not sure what but after a long advantage awarded a penalty to OW in front of posts. OW 8 - Lutts 5.

Shortly after a penalty was awarded to Lutts and although it was within Ryan’s range the wind was just too strong & pulled it away. Lutts asserted good pressure on OW and a strong rolling maul was rewarded by Ryan breaking through & scoring under posts and converting try. OW 8- Lutts 12. Following the restart, OW were awarded a penalty which was taken quickly by OW's Alex Williams who ran through to reply under posts, easy conversion OW 15 - Lutts 12. A further OW penalty stretched their lead to 18-12. A breakaway by forwards Mikey & Josh nearly led to a final try by Lutts to clinch the match but we just lost out and ran out of time. The Lutts lads rallied well against both wind & ref. Brad had a good game, Jonathan Wright doesn't shy away from putting his body on the line & Mikey & Josh Williams were very strong in the forwards. Well done to Sam Walch for standing in as Hooker - good job! All Lutts lads put a lot of effort into playing very positive, disciplined rugby, and on the whole it was a pretty even match. Well done!
