Leicester Lions 5pts v Lutterworth 22pts
First run out this season for this barbarians squad so a lot of interest shown to see just what they could do, they started slowly and found themselves a try down after 5 minutes. We seemed a little lethargic and it took at least 20 minutes into the game before we woke up. We won a scrum and it was Alex Dann who got the ball and broke. Alex looked around to pass and realised he was on his own and had to take it on. Take it he did and he side stepped one tackle and went through on his own to complete a 60 yard run and touch down in the corner 5 -5.
From that moment Lutterworth took control of the game. Luke Sandford made some wonderful runs and Ben Stone was back to his best form with some great tackling. Lutterworth were awarded a penalty and Sandford slotted the ball squarely between the posts to give Lutts the advantage in score of 5 – 8. The Lions broke through but Stone put in a tremendous run to catch their speedy centre and caught him just short of the line, the ball was recovered and the danger averted. Half time.
One way traffic in the second half with Lions defending very stoutly this enabled Lutterworth to push more men forward. Glover was putting in a great performance and his efforts were gaining us some valuable yardage on the pitch. Another try was inevitable and it came when Chris Goodfellow who was having a great game won another of his impressive lineouts, he caught the ball and on his way down passed it back and the ball got to Sandford, Luke put in a burst of speed and went passed four defenders to place the ball down for a very good try, he also scored the conversion to make the score 5 – 15. A few more replacements from the bench and Lutterworth maintained their superiority on the game. A third try came in the form of Alex Chan, We won a scrum and some great hands from the pack resulted in Alex going over in the corner and Sandford scoring the conversion 5 – 22. Final score.
Coaches Comments: "A first game with this squad and although we started slowly we finished the game with a fantastic flurry of good passing and fluent movement. The forwards looked strong and the backs were creating a lot when running at our opponents. The Coaches have chosen two players from the forwards and one from the backs to share man of the match. "
Forwards: Chris Goodfellow & Matt Glover. Backs : Ben Stone
A special mention for Jonathan Wright who had a very creditable first game for the club. He worked very hard throughout the match.
