Under 16 Match Report

Sunday 11th November 2007

Lutterworth 0pts  v  Melton Mowbray 31pts

Another cold, blustery day.

We were facing very large, strong, very physical opposition. With the wind in our faces and giving Melton a slight advantage.

The first five minutes started quite slowly, then it all started to speed up, the first points came from Melton having a scrum on our 5 yard line, the ball came out the base & a quick backs move on the blind side saw Melton go over the try line with a conversion starting the score at 7-0.

Back to the restart, Josh Williams was once again very strong; snaffling some good ball from the scrums, and Matt Glover was very strong in the line out winning ball from both throws. One line out won saw Ben Stone start on a run but was stopped short by a high tackle, the scrum and action that followed saw us lose the ball but Melton’s try was disallowed due to a deliberate Knock on!.

Our lads played brilliantly in the first half, Mikey kept coming out of the scrums with the ball, our forwards were very strong against a considerably larger pack & the backs put together some quick passes and some huge tackles were made by our boys (one in particular by Jack Lewis, just before half time, who felled a Melton player twice his size). We held them up & prevented a further score but the strength of the wind & their ferocity of play kept us from their line.

7 – 0 HALF TIME

In the second half typically the wind dropped so no advantage there, and although our lads never gave up & fought hard, most of the play seemed to be in our half. Bradley Pell made two notable brilliant try stopping tackles, but Melton’s back started to up the pace and got over the line 12-0 conversion missed.

The next Melton try came from their scrum, again near our 5 yard line with the larger Melton lads forcing their way through a number of brave tackles 17-0. Towards the end of the game we spent some time in their half Johnny Faire caught an amazing highball and we took off Mickey kicked the ball down the pitch with all the Lutts lads chasing it down, unfortunately they managed to rally and bring the ball back to our half and after some frantic play another try was scored and converted 24-0.

Our lads never gave up and played exceptionally well, putting in good tackles against some very big lads. The whole team played as a team and with their heads held high as they should. it was an exciting, fast, hard fought game and the Melton team will certainly know they’ve had a good game of rugby today, the score line does not really indicate the effort our lads put in ending at 31-0.
