Derby 0pts  v  Lutterworth  24pts  

On Sunday Lutterworth U13’s visited Derby for the first time, however the venue was unfamiliar to both sides as due to a festival at Derby’s own ground the game was played at Derby University. It was a pleasure to play rugby on a grassed pitch, which clearly sees a lot less action than most club grounds, and even the wind which had been gusting for most of the week seemed calm somewhat around kick off. Derby’s Tigers side have by all accounts had a very good season.

Notwithstanding the fact that we took a somewhat depleted squad the boys played extremely well against a strong Derby side and never looked in danger of losing the game. Lutterworth’s forwards dominated the possession from start to finish and it was extremely pleasing to see some fantastic body positions in two or three rolling mauls which Derby’s forwards could not cope with. Derby started the game kicking into the wind and was soon on the back foot with George Ball sprinting clear to score an unconverted try to give a half time score Derby Tiger’s 0 Lutterworth 5.

Despite playing into the wind in the second half the game followed the same pattern as the first half with Lutterworth’s forwards dominating and Derby being unable to release their quick wingers due to some excellent cover tackling.  George Ball scored a further try as the ball was again moved out well through hands to give George a clear run to score under the posts. James Gamble added the conversion. Tom Bingley was driven over by his pack for a further score which was converted by Jimmy Gamble and the scoring was round off by George Ball completing his hat trick having again sprinted clear of the Derby defence.

It was a pity that due to the limited resources at the University we were unable to have a good chat with the Derby coaching team over a beer after the game but no doubt we will catch up with them next season. If only to discuss how a ‘one man’ team could so effectively shut out their normally free scoring Tigers side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
