Under 13 Match Report

SUNDAY 3rd February 2008

Lutterworth  24pts  v  Nuneaton  5 pts

After a couple of weeks trying to organise a game through the pool we found ourselves with a very competitive game against good quality opposition at short notice in Nuneaton, for which Steve Lear must be commended. The Nuneaton boys were very well drilled and were almost as physical as their supporters were vocal.

Lutterworth began playing into the wind and whilst on the offensive for much of the first half were unable to make many clear cut scoring opportunities. The only score of the first half came following a good period of forward pressure when the ball broke out to George Ball who jinked his way over the line from no more than 10 metres out.  In the blustery conditions the score was not converted. Despite the first half being something of a grind it was a great effort playing into the teeth of the gale to turn around with an advantage.  Half time score Lutterworth 5 Nuneaton 0.

The second half was scrappy from the restart and Lutterworth were pinned back in their own half by Nuneaton for several  phases of play culminating in well deserved forwards try which again went unconverted. Following the shock of having been pegged back Lutterworth began to play more with their head (and boot) to take advantage of the wind.  With Nuneaton unable to clear their 5 metre line great scavenging work by Sam Webb created our second try of the game this time for Ollie Allen.  Firstly Sam charged down in an attempted clearance which kept Nuneaton on the defensive around their 5 metre line and when Nuneaton again tried to kick the ball clear, Sam pinched it from the kicker in mid air, recycled it and Ollie Allen duly drove the ball over to score.

After this Lutterworth never looked like relinquishing the lead George Ball scored two further tries the first following a great kick over the top by James Gamble superbly collected by Tom Bingley and off loaded to George Ball running in the 14 channel to score under the post and the second a trade mark George Ball individual try which was run in from within his own half again under the post. Both tries were converted to give a final score of Lutterworth 24 Nuneaton 5.
