County Cup - Semi Final
Lutterworth 41pts v Coalville 5pts
The out of town disappointments at Northampton and Nottingham were not ideal preparation for the long awaited County Cup Semi-final against Coalville and in view of recent performances both coaches and parents were a little apprehensive about the build-up to the most important game of the season so far.
The boys did little to steady anyone’s nerves as Coalville playing with the wind in the first half and almost directly from the kick-off launched a long punt up field which lead to a race for the ball ultimately won by the Coalville winger to touch down and set everyone’s nerves on edge. The conversion was missed and the boys knuckled down to the task in hand.
Normal service was soon resumed with Lutterworth’s forwards dominating Coalville and giving plenty of ball to the backs to utilise. This being said the equalising try was scored by Ben Gledhill picking up the pieces at the back of a maul and yomping over the try line to bring the scores level. George Ball then proceeded to outstrip the defence for two further tries the second following a superb pickup from a bouncing ball at full speed (well probably half speed for George). One of the tries was converted to give a half time score of Lutterworth 17 Coalville 5 which was a fantastic effort playing into the wind.
In the second half and with the wind the result was never in doubt. Ben Gledhill added a further try George Ball a further brace and also unselfishly off loaded when clean through to Charlie Watts running a good support line to score under the posts. Jimmy Gamble converted two of the second half tries to give a final score of Lutterworth 41 Coalville 5 and a place in the final against Market Harborough on 13 April at Market Harborough.
All the boys who took part in the game should be commended, the forwards for the fantastic exhibition of driving rugby and the backs for the superb ball handling to create the space to play entertaining rugby in the difficult conditions.
