League Match

VIPERS 10pts  v  LUTTERWORTh  3pts

Bringing the season to a close, this local derby between two sides with little to play for except pride could have turned out to be a dismal affair. Yet it was far from it, both teams played with spirit and determination in a close fought encounter that could have gone either way. Honours were pretty much even for the greater part of the game apart from the opening ten minutes when Vipers broke through the centrefield to score and convert a try that was to provide them the winning margin.

Uncharacteristically Lutterworth came off worse in the scrum all afternoon and both scrum halves, Jez Bell, who was taken off injured just after half time and replacement, Tom Carter had a difficult job creating opportunities behind a pack that was being pushed backwards or wheeled. Vipers conceded nearly twice as many penalties as the visitors but Lutterworth failed to convert this advantage into points. Lutterworth’s defence was however outstanding with Simon Deacon in the forwards and Bobby Williams in the backs both rock solid. Lock, Adam Conway gave another fine performance, looking very dangerous carrying the ball forward.

Lutterworth did reply to Vipers score the first half with a Williams converted penalty and in the second period the home side kicked another three points to give them a narrow but deserved victory by virtue of that single try.

So the season ends with Lutterworth in a lowly fourth from bottom position in the league. However the Club will be looking to bring home some silver when the Second XV take on Old Laurentians at Rugby Lions ground next Sunday afternoon in the final of the Warwickshire and District ‘Clonmell Cup’ Kick off 2.30pm.
