League Match
STEWART & LLOYDS 45pts v LUTTERWORTH 1st : 0pts
Down in Corby with the Stewarts and Lloyds Blues again (apologies to Bob Dylan!) Lutterworth could take little positive from this, their worst defeat for some considerable time at the hands of a well drilled, strongly committed Corby side that were pretty much superior in every department. Highlights for Lutterworth were dogged performances by Chris Gregory at number eight, Gaz Court at scrum half and Phil Daffern in the centre. Gregory in particular showed a captain’s true grit and never gave up until the bitter end.
After the first quarter the visitors were shell-shocked to be twenty odd points down in as many minutes and were left with the almost insurmountable challenge of getting back into a game that had been taken away from them by some well organised and impressive Corby attacks. With the benefit of the sloping pitch and prevailing wind, Corby ran in a fourth converted try before the break giving them a huge twenty eight to nil half time lead.
Despite some spirited resistance Lutterworth could not gain a foothold and even their usual renowned strengths in the set pieces crumbled under the continued onslaught. Three more tries from the home side sealed what was for them a momentous victory, their celebrations spoiled only by a somewhat harsh refereeing decision; a red card dished out to their number eight seconds before the final whistle.
Coach, Mick Welham although obviously disappointed by the heaviest defeat suffered during his tenure said the following;
"Lutterworth have put in some fine performances recently at home with victory narrowly eluding them, providing we get in two good well attended training sessions this week, a change in fortunes is expected when we face what will be a determined Wellingborough who return to Ashby Lane next Saturday.’"
This game is a replay of an earlier league fixture narrowly lost by Lutterworth after the game went to uncontested scrums. The League considered this may have affected the final result and subsequently asked for the game to be replayed. Kick-off 2.15pm.
