EDF Energy Senior Vase Round 2
WOODRUSH 1st : 5pts V LUTTERWORTH 1st : 17pts
Despite being a league lower Woodrush were no walkover, Lutterworth were pretty much in control for most of the game but in the final quarter the home side came back strongly testing the visitors’ defence and scoring a consolation try.
Star of the show for Lutterworth, seventeen-year-old open side flanker, Richard Bailey had a dream debut earning the praise of the coaches and scoring Lutterworth’s opening try. Another young up and coming player, Tom Renshaw, was equally impressive in the front row.
Lutterworth’s forwards dominated the opening quarter, especially skipper, Chris Gregory and hooker Paul Riley, carrying the ball strongly through Woodrush’s beleaguered defence. It was however the visitors’ back three of Stretton, Daffern and Ford that looked the most dangerous and when they broke loose after a Lutterworth free kick that man Bailey was on hand to take the ball over for a try that he will never forget. Just before the break a well executed line out and drive in the home side’s twenty-two allowed Riley to ground the ball and give his side a twelve point to nil lead.
Not long into the second forty Lutterworth displayed their sometimes well hidden skills with a peach of a try, good work by the pack set up quick ball for a threequarter move straight out of the coaching manual ultimately taken over by winger, Phil Daffern. Down but not beaten, Woodrush surged back into the game and only dogged determined defence limited their final tally to five points.
