League Match
DAVENTRY 1st : 14pts V LUTTERWORTH 1st : 35pts
Languishing at the bottom of the league having lost all of their games and without any coaching staff, Daventry are in a sorry state, they added to their misery on Saturday collecting a remarkable three red cards from an ill disciplined, spoiling and disruptive display that owed little to the game of rugby. To their credit Lutterworth refused to be dragged down to the home side’s level, prop, Paul Wilford was outstanding, leading from the front in a well disciplined, hard working performance by the whole team. It was however disappointing and puzzling to the visiting supporters that Lutterworth failed to amass a cricket score against what ended up a twelve-man team. Lutterworth’s back three were consistently left out of the game without the ball, staring tantalisingly at acres of undefended open space.
After an untidy scrappy opening quarter Fly half Andy Burgess slotted a penalty conversion, the first three of his afternoon’s tally of fifteen kicked points. Burgess’s second penalty was followed by a try from the home side, their number eight taking the ball over from the back of a five metre scrum. Daventry’s narrow lead was short lived as Burgess struck again just before the break to give his side a first half lead of nine to seven.
Early in the second period Dave Stannard showed his undoubted potential in the centre, following a fine turnover by the forwards Stannard eagerly accepted the ball and brushing aside three defenders, surging over from thirty yards. Hooker, Paul Riley added a second try but Daventry, despite now being severely outnumbered, kept themselves in the game with another seven points. During the final quarter Lutterworth at last woke up to the realisation that given that rare and wonderful thing (the ball!) their backs could inflict serious damage to the denuded opposition, most who seemed to have been sent off the field for an early bath. Andy Burgess adding his fine kicking performance with the penultimate score and flying winger Dan Ford scampered over set up by Matt Randle who once gain looked very comfortable in the number seven shirt.
This unappetising contest was possibly memorable in so much it was testament to the rudderless downward spiral of a team without the benefit of coaching staff. Lutterworth are very fortunate to have many coaches at all levels who give up hours every week for the benefit of The Club and players.
