League Match

LUTTERWORTH  1st : 12pts  V  LEIGHTON BUZZARD 1st 19pts

The first league game of the season turned out to be a typical Midlands Three South clash. Against a competent but unimaginative Buzzard outfit, Lutterworth looked at times dangerous but never in control, the visitors did just enough to take the points with a well-organised and simple display of ‘ten man’ rugby. The visitors’ powerful pack was aided and abetted by fine performances from their scrum half and stand-off, Stuart Wilson, whose kicking out of hand gave his side the edge in a hard fought and close contest.

For the home side; centre, Bobby Williams, was also in fine form with the boot hitting the target four times out of five to secure all Lutterworth’s points, but it was poor finishing and basic errors from four or five simple try scoring opportunities that lost the day.

The first forty was played almost exclusively in Lutterworth’s half but Williams kept his side in touch with two successful penalty efforts. The pack defended, at times, superbly to limit Buzzard’s half time tally to eleven and a narrow lead of five points. Before the half time whistle, Lutterworth’s backs squandered a relatively easy scoring opportunity that would have, at least, levelled the scoreline.

Whatever was said at the break did the trick and Lutterworth came out all guns blazing treating their supporters to fifteen minutes of fast open running rugby. Hooker, Paul Riley together with back rows, Chris Gregory and Adam Conway punched holes into the Buzzard defence but the lack of clinical finishing and chances not taken brought only a solitary three points. A dash of controversy was added by the referee who missed and failed to award a successful Buzzard drop goal and then awarded a try to their flanker who crossed the line without the ball! However this extraordinary turn of events and net advantage of two points did not affect the final result and the best side on the day took home the bacon.

Next Saturday Northampton BBOB visit Ashy Lane, kick off; 3.00pm as usual all are welcome and what’s more it’s free!
