Under 16 Match Report
Syston 7's Tournament
Sunday 29th April 2007
This Sunday Lutts celebrated the end of the season by taking part in the prestigious Syston 7’s Invitational Tournament.
This Tournament involved
8 teams, split between 2 leagues, with the top two teams in each section
going through to the semi final. The games were 7 minutes each way, with
drop kick conversions.
Lutts group A results were as follows:
0-12 vs Melton Mowbray
A slow start from Lutts as they struggled in the first game against a lively Melton side who scored two tries and converted one, with no reply from Lutterworth.
43-0 vs Barbarians 2
A great hat trick came from Gareth Clarke and a try each from Luke Ball, Will Keeling, Connor Smith and Greg Littlewood, along with conversions from Bradly Milner, Smith, Greg Littlewood and Ball.
31-0 vs Syston
Two great tries from Smith and one a piece from James Lloyd, Keeling and Littlewood. The conversions came from Smith (2) and Keeling.
This left the standings in-group A as follows, with the top two qualifying for the semi final:
Melton Mowbray 3 3 0 0 69 5 6
Syston 3 1 0 2 24 66 2
Mansfield B 3 0 0 3 7 91 0
So Lutts moved on to meet Hinckley who won league B, in the semi final, while Melton played Vipers in the other game.
A great display from Lutterworth saw two tries coming from a lively Connor Smith, while Gareth Clarke and Simon Johnson scored a try each. And a conversion each came from Littlewood and Smith.
Melton Mowbray had beaten Vipers 17-4 in the other semi final and were confident of beating Lutts again after taking their scalp in the league stages. But they underestimated the quality of this superb Lutterworth team as they proceeded to totally dominate this final winning 31-5.
Luke Ball opened the scoring as he picked up a loose Melton kick and ran down the wing at speed before cutting in to score under the posts. He converted his own score. Ball was on fire and the next try again came from his individual skill as he kicked the ball forward from 30 metres out and won the race to catch the ball and touch down. Once again he converted. Within seconds of the restart Melton were attacking the Lutts line and the ball was shipped out to Jordan Curtis, who broke through to score in the corner making it 12-5 at the break.
Lutts came out even more determined and Ashley Parrott scored a lovely try as he ran in from the half way line. Milner converted. Try four was as a result of some lovely passing as the ball eventually reached Smith to crash through for the score. With seconds to go another clever passing move between Littlewood and Clarke opened up space for Littlewood to run in down the wing and touch down behind the posts. Littlewood made the kick to leave it 31-5 to Lutterworth at the close.
Head Coach Chris Everard said after the tournament:
‘After a disappointing start in the first game we played some fantastic, attacking rugby from there on in. I was very proud of how well the entire squad performed today and this has made it a lovely end to the season. Well done Melton for a great final and thank you all at Syston for another fantastic tournament’
