So Lutts moved on to meet Mansfield
A, who won league 1, in the final.
Both teams had remained unbeaten in the league stages, so something had to give and we weren’t disappointed as we witnessed a great final. Both teams cancelled each other out and it took another great piece of individual skill as Lutts took the first score. Gareth Clarke, who had been on fire all throughout the tournament, picked up the ball deep in his own territory and made a brilliant mazy run, handing off three defenders to score in the corner.
Mansfield were quick to respond as they equalised through their winger, finishing off a good passing move in the corner. Both sides had opportunities to clinch the game but it finished 5-5 at the close. This meant the dreaded ‘golden try’ extra time, meaning the next score won it!
Both teams had attacking opportunities, but Mansfield sealed it when they won the race to a hack forward and scored the winning try.
Head Coach Chris Everard said after the tournament:
‘We played some fantastic, attacking rugby, reaching the final without even conceding a try. I was very proud of how well the entire squad performed throughout the day and golden try time is always going to be a lottery. Well done Mansfield for a great final’
