Under 16 Match Report

Saturday 28th January 2007

Lutterworth 19pts  v  Litchfield 18pts

Lutts u16’s extend run to 18 games!

Lutterworth under 16’s welcomed Lichfield to Ashby Lane and with the visitors only defeated once this season, a close contest was on the cards. The big crowd were not disappointed when a great game went to the wire as Lutts ran out 19-18 winners.

Lutts once again had their Australian trio, appearing in their last game before travelling back to Sydney on Monday, which partly made up for 11 players missing due to Midland and County duties. The first try had plenty of southern hemisphere influence as Clay Brody made a storming drive towards the line, but he was eventually stopped 10 metres out. Scrum half Sam Williamson was in support as he picked up the ball and used all his strength to force his way through and over the line. Bradly Milner kicked the conversion to make it 7-0. After 20 minutes Lichfield were rewarded with a penalty after some sustained pressure, which was successfully kicked by Adam Smith. Both sides had chances to score the next try before Lichfield eventually took the lead, close to half time. The ball was passed from one wing to the other before finding Dan Rowlands. He made a lovely break down the wing to score in the corner and make it 8-7 to the visitors at half time.

Lutterworth came out the more positive as if motivated by the threat of loosing their unbeaten run. They regained the lead when they took line out ball and moved the ball along the line for Ben Seymour to take at speed and make a lovely mazy run through the defensive line and score under the posts. Jack Edwards kicked the conversion. Litchfield then showed why they were having such a good season by pilling on 10 minutes of pressure to score two tries of their own. The first came from Rowlands as he again showed his speed, racing in down the wing. He then capped off a great personal performance as he got his hat trick score, to make it 18-14 to Lichfield. With the clock ticking down Lutts made attack after attack but Lichfield held out. However a couple of Australians had other thoughts as Clay Brodie made another stomping run towards the line. He looked like scoring himself but was eventually pulled down short of the line. Sam Williamson was again on hand to pick up a drop over the try line to make the final score 19-18 to Lutterworth.

Head Coach Chris Everard said ”What a brilliant game, the lead kept changing hands and both sides could have won it in the end. Lichfield has certainly developed a very powerful squad, giving us our most difficult game this season and we look forward to meeting them again soon. I would also like to thank Clay, Sam and Ben for the last three weeks. It has been a great experience for all the squad and I’m sure many of the lads will keep in touch, before we all meet again in Australia.”

Lutterworth travel to meet Coalville next Sunday for the Semi Final of the Leicestershire County Plate, with the kick off at 11.00 AM.
