Lutterworth 27pts v Abercwmboi 12pts
On Saturday Lutterworth welcomed a Welsh-touring side in the shape of Abercwmboi RFC. This was a return fixture to repay this friendly Welsh side for their hospitality when Lutts toured Wales as under 9‘s, seven years ago! In a hard fought game, Lutts ran out 27-12 winners, despite a gallant fight back by the visitors in the second half.
In a superb half of play Lutts scored four unanswered tries through Simon Johnson, Will Keeling and a brace from Luke Ball. Ball’s first came from great passing move along the line for him to race in and score in the corner, while the second finished off a lovely training ground move, which saw him again scoring in the corner. Keeling converted the second try. Lutterworth then showed the power of there forward play as they brilliantly drove Abercwmboi from deep in Lutts territory to within 10 metres of the own line, before the ball was dropped by the defence and Johnson was the first to react and race in to score between the posts. The final play of the half came as some great Keeling skill saw him kick through and chase his own ball. He won the race to touch down and made it 22-0 to Lutts at half time.
The Welsh visitors had been closer than the scoreboard suggested and their hard work and determination was rewarded as they dominated most of the second half. It showed the heart that this Abercwmboi team had as they scored two super tries through Reece Burgess and Keiron Hoden. Burgess finished off a passing sequence as he received the ball out wide. He also converted his own try. Hoden scored a great individual try as he intercepted the ball and chased in from half way. Lutts had the last say as Connor Smith scored a lovely solo try, handing off three players as he powered through and into the corner, making it 27-12 at the close.
Coach Mike Rowe said, ”A brilliant game from two powerful sides, with lots of commitment and passion, but played in the best of spirits. It was lovely to welcome the side that had looked after us on our very first ever tour, all those years ago. I hope we get a chance for these sides to meet again in the future”
Next Sunday Lutterworth face a tough encounter as they travel to meet Doncaster RFC, one of the strongest sides in their region. So the Lutterworth 22 match unbeaten run will face a severe test!
