Under 16 Match Report
SUNDAY 21st January 2007
Paviors 5pts v Lutterworth 19pts
Lutterworth under 16’s travelled to meet one of the top teams in the Midlands, in the shape of Paviors and produced a superb performance to win 19-5. The only previous time these two teams had met a junior level was in last seasons East Midlands Championship Final, which Lutts won 10-5, so Pavs were sure to be out for revenge.
Lutts dominated the first ten minutes and were rewarded with the opening score through lock Josh McLaurin. It came from a lovely pick up and drive by captain Matt Everard, that was held up. He moved the ball to McLaurin who used all his strength to power through and over the line. Will Keeling successfully kicked the conversion. They then had a couple of chances to extend the lead but Paviors held out and then punished Lutts by scoring a try of their own, from there first serious visit into Lutts territory. It came from winning their own line out ball on the 22 and passing the ball out to Liam Annable who made a powerful run through the defensive line, to make it 7-5 in Lutts favour at half time.
Lutterworth came out a lot more positive and were soon rewarded with a second score. Scrum ball on the Pavs 5 metre line was passed to Gareth Clarke who bashed through but was held short of the line. The ball was quickly moved out to Greg Littlewood, who used all his speed to break through and score in the corner. Keeling kicked the difficult conversion to make it 14-5. The one-way pressure continued and another try was sure to come. Sure enough it came through Keeling. An alert Keeling pounced on loose ball from a Pavs 5 metre scrum and he was unstoppable from such a close distance. Paviors then showed their class by camping in the Lutts half for the last 5 minutes of the game but the strong Lutts defence held out for an excellent 19-5 win, extending the unbeaten run to 17 games this season.
Coach Nathan McLaurin said” what a fantastic game played by two superb teams. I wish we could play quality sides like Paviors every week. Despite the intensity of the game, it was played in a very sporting spirit, which made it a pleasure to watch. This Lutts squad have been split up by various County and Midlands games over the last few months and it was great to see them back together at club level, at long last”
Lutterworth travel to Litchfield next Sunday, with the kick off at 11.00 AM.
