Under 16 Match Report

SUNDAY 15th October 2006

Old Coventrians 7pts  V  Lutterworth 24pts

Lutts U16’s back on winning track!

Lutterworth under 16’s travelled to Coventry to meet Old Coventrians on Sunday and recovered from the previous weeks cup exit to run out 24-7 winners.

Old Coventrians showed their strength as they fielded a strong team, despite missing their first line front row to a Graham Rowntree workshop.   In fact the home side had the best of the first ten minutes taking the lead through a lovely score by their winger, who made a speedy run down the wing and in under the posts. The fly half successfully converted the kick. Lutts replied almost straight away as great hands along the line saw the ball moved out to Gareth Clarke. He made an attempt to crash through but was held up, James Cooke was in great support on his shoulder to take the pass and dive over the line. Old Covs had a chance to extend their slender lead but missed a penalty kick on Lutts 22, to make the half time score 7-5 to the home side.

Lutts came out a more determined team and scored with a lovely try through Gareth Clarke, in the first minute. No 8 Ashley Parrott made great ground before slipping the ball to Ethan Wright. He set the platform before popping a pass to Clarke, who raced down the wing to score in the corner. Lutts third try came as Will Keeling stole Old Covs ball on half way. The ball was moved out to Clarke who made a lovely mazy run to score under the posts. Keeling converted the kick. With only two minutes left on the clock Lutts made it 4 as scrum half Sam Berrill made a lovely drive for the line. He was held up but moved the ball to captain Josh McLaurin who powered through the mass of bodies to score his first of the season. Keeling converted to make the final score 24-7 to Lutterworth.

A Lutts spokesman said “a great game by both sets of players, thank you to Old Covs, who put on a great performance despite missing some key players. And well done to Lutterworth, who worked hard all day and recaptured a little of their old form against one of Warwickshire’s strongest teams”.

Next week Lutts entertain Oakham at home (kick off 11.00 am).
