Under 16 Match Report

SUNDAY 15th April 2007

Lutterworth 14pts  v  Hinckley 7pts

Lutts and Hinckley in a classic.

On Sunday Lutterworth welcomed great rivals Hinckley to Ashby Lane in a game that would do well to live up to the quality of the last time they met, a 9-8 thriller in December. Both teams proceeded to serve up yet another classic as Lutts ran out 14-7 winners.

Hinckley dominated the first 20 minutes of play as they powered forward at every opportunity. Phase after phase of attack was repelled by some brilliant defence and superb tackling by Lutterworth. Despite this pressure and possession, the visitors never really threatened the Lutts line and they were made to pay as Dan Holmes intercepted a loose pass on half way and raced in unopposed to score the opening try of the day. Will Keeling converted the difficult kick. For the rest of half the two teams cancelled each other out and it remained 7-0 at half time.

Lutts had a chance to extend the lead but Keeling narrowly missed the difficult penalty. However Lutts did get the next score as lovely hands from scrum ball saw the ball moved through Keeling and Matt Everard, who popped the ball up for Greg Littlewood to crash through at speed in the corner. Keeling again converted. Hinckley then had another dominant spell during which they were rewarded with a try. It came through their powerful pack as they drove prop Andrew Steven through and over the line. Scrum half Chris Cooke dropkicked the conversion to set up an exciting finish. However this strong Lutterworth side held out for a superb 14-7 win.

Head Coach Chris Everard said  ‘another fantastic battle between these two powerful squads. The intensity of these games just get higher and higher and I was very pleased with my side’s performance. Their commitment was awesome, especially in the first 20 minutes’
