Under 16 Match Report

Saturday 14th January 2006

Northampton Old Scouts 22pts v Lutterworth 25pts

Lutts u16’s win with some help from their Australian friends!!

Lutterworth under 16’s travelled to meet an extremely well drilled Northampton Old Scouts and produced an excellent performance to win the match with the last play of the game, 25-22. This talented young Lutts side were welcoming three visitors from Australia in Ben Seymour, Clay Brodie and Sam Williamson. They have come across visiting for three weeks and are staying with Head Coach Chris Everard. Lutts visit their team, Eastern Suburbs RUC in July for a tour of Sydney, Australia.

After all the bad rain, it was a lovely day to play rugby and both teams stepped up to the challenge, cancelling each other out in the first 15 minutes. Lutts pressure then led to a penalty, which Bradly Milner kicked through the middle of the posts. OS came more into the game and then successfully kicked a penalty of their own through Ben Crossland. Lutts then started to dominate and it was from a well-stolen Old Scouts line out ball that Milner taped the ball to Sam Williamson, who moved it onto James Cooke and on to Ben Seymour, who streaked through at speed and under the posts to finish off a lovely team try. Milner successfully kicked the conversion. Try two came minutes later as good scrum ball from Williamson was moved through Seymour, Joe Burnham and out to Miles Lowry on the wing. He sold a lovely dummy before diving over the line, making it 15-3 to Lutts at half time.

Northampton came out with added vigour and dominated much of the first 10 minutes, which saw them score two quick tries through Matt Hakes and Richard Wallis, with Crossland converting the 2nd to make it tied at 15-15. The game was turned upside down as Ryan Andrews score a third for OS, which Crossland again converted to put them ahead for the first time in the game. Lutterworth dominated the rest of the game in an attempt to draw level and the pressure finally paid off as Seymour scored a second. It came through great work by the forwards who pushed towards the home sides line and as the ball went loose, Seymour was quickest to react as he picked up and dived through as mass of bodies, to touch down. Crucially the kick was missed meaning Lutts still needed a score to steel the win. This exciting game went to the last play of the game as free kick was moved from one wing to the other for Bradly Milner to dive in at the corner and give Lutts the win, 25-22.

Coach Mike Rowe said” what a thrilling game, contested by two excellent teams. I know Northampton Old Scouts will feel disappointed but what a fantastic advert for the game of rugby, played in a competitive but brilliant spirit. I was especially pleased with how welcome our boys made Sam, Clay and Ben, who all played their part in this great result”

Lutterworth meet rivals Paviours in a trip to Nottingham next Sunday, with the kick off at 11.00 AM.
