Under 16 Match Report

SUNDAY 4th March 2007

Doncaster 5pts v Lutterworth 39pts

Lutts loose unbeaten run in classic match.

On Sunday Lutterworth travelled to Doncaster RFC to meet one of Yorkshires strongest teams at this age group and what a fantastic game what witnessed by the big crowd. Doncaster eventually ran out a close 19-17 winners.

The visitors had to cope with the loss of 14 players due to England, school call ups and injuries, but they needn’t of worried as the team faced up well against one of the biggest forward packs they are likely to come across. A quick tap penalty by Will Keeling led to the first try as the ball was quickly passed along the line for Simon Johnson to crash through in the corner to give Lutts an early lead. They then had to endure a formidable forward drive from the home side, which was eventually pushed over to score. The kick was converted to make it 5-7. Both teams had great opportunities to score, before the Doncaster winger finished off a lovely passing sequence to score in the corner. The kick was converted making it 5-14 at half time.

Lutts were staring defeat in the face for the first time this season but this fine young squad are made of powerful stuff and they deservedly pulled one score back through Connor Smith. He picked up in Doncaster territory and made a powerful run to dive through in the corner. Crucially the kick was narrowly missed making it 10-14 with 15 minutes to go. The home side then picked up a fortunate try as a loose pass was intercepted and scored at the side of the posts. That kick was missed which then made for a gripping last 5 minutes as Lutts forced there way back in with an Adam Marfleet try, with the forward reacting quicker to a loose ball in the home sides touch area. Will Keeling converted to set up a possible comeback but the clock ran down and Doncaster had taken a great scalp.

Coach Mike Rowe said, ”A brilliant game from two powerful, committed sides. It was a long journey but well worth it to play a quality side like Doncaster. Thank you to all at this fantastic club, great facilities, great coaching team and rugby played in an excellent spirit. Rugby was definitely the winner today and I only hope we meet this side again in the future.”

Next Sunday Lutterworth travel to Boston to appear in the prestigious Boston 10’s Invitational Tournament.
