Under 16 Match Report
SUNDAY 3rd December 2006
Lutterworth 13pts v Derby 10pts
Lutterworth under 16’s welcomed Derby to Ashby Lane on Sunday and with players missing at Midlands Trials for both teams, a close encounter was guaranteed. There were no disappointments as Lutts ran out narrow 13-10 winners.
The first 15 minutes saw the teams cancelling each other out as both teams tried to play rugby in atrocious windy conditions. Lutts had the benefit of the strong wind and opened the scoring through a penalty by Bradly Milner. The first try of the day was soon to follow as Lutts won scrum ball close to Derby’s line. Scrum half Sam Berrill picked up and with the help of his forwards was brilliantly driven through and over the line to score a lovely try, making it 8-0 to Lutts at half time.
Derby turned round with the help of the wind this half and they spent the first 5 minutes camped in Lutts territory. A quick tap penalty was quickly moved out to the winger who used great strength to dive through and score in the corner. Derby threatened to overrun Lutts, before we saw the try of the game. Great hands between Luke Ball and James Cooke saw the ball moved out to Bradly Milner on the wing. The lock showed the speed of a back as he ran in down the wing and touched down in the corner, to cap off a great individual performance. The score rejuvenated Lutts and they had a couple of chances to finish the game off but to no avail. Derby showed their character by once again pulling themselves back into the game. The score came from a 5-metre scrum, which saw the ball eventually moved out for their no 8 to bulldoze his way over the line. This exciting game could have gone either way, but the whistle finally went, making the final score 13-10 to Lutterworth.
A Lutts spokesman said “A superb game of rugby by two extremely well drilled and organised teams. What a fantastic advert for rugby at this age group, once again played in the very best of spirits. Well done to both teams.”
Next week Lutts travel to meet Barkers Butts in Coventry.
