Under 15 Match Report
SUNDAY 24th September 2006
Lutterworth 11pts V Chesterfield 36pts
Lutts Overpowered
The day dawned wet & overcast but by the time everyone had got to the Club it had cleared to a bright morning leaving the going good to firm and prospects looking set for a good match. Then Chesterfield took to the pitch to warm up and it very soon became apparent to several of the spectators that the home team were in for a challenging morning against a big, and what looked to be well disciplined side.
With Lutterworth kicking off just after 11 o'clock the sides spent the first few minutes getting the measure of each other with tentative probing from each but not much past the opposition 22. Following a drive by Lutterworth, Chesterfield gave away a penalty just inside their 22, just to the right of their posts. From this position the kick was opted for and was well taken by Ryan to put Lutterworth 3 points to the good. From the restart Lutterworth seemed to be unable to gain significant ground and came under mounting pressure from a Chesterfield pack that was getting into gear and keeping the ball tight. With 10 minutes gone the Chesterfield number 8 picked up a drove from a set scrum close to the Lutterworth line but solid defending prevented grounding. They tried the same tactic again from the scrum 5 and again a determined defence held, this time managing to gain the ball, resulting in a Ryan clearance kick with the wind taking the play up to the half way line. The respite didn't last long, with Chesterfield retaining the vast majority of possession their forwards gradually worked their way back deep into the Lutterworth 22 and with 20minutes gone spread the ball wide to Luke Cocking who went over in the far corner. The difficult conversion attempt (given the wide angle and against the breeze) was not made. From the restart Lutterworth starting to see a little of the ball and with 25 minutes played a cross field kick and forward drive resulted in a penalty being conceded by Chesterfield just inside their 22. The kick was opted for again and Ryan duly obliged enabling Lutterworth to end the half one point ahead 6 to 5
Chesterfield opened the second half from their kick off with some determined driving play that took them close to the Lutterworth line resulting in Karl Goucher picking up from the base of a loose ruck to dive over for a try with just over a minute of the half played. The conversion was not successful. As in the first half with what possession Lutterworth were getting it was being played out to the backs and moved wide in an attempt create opportunities. With just over 5 minutes of the half gone Harry Goldworthy capitalised on one such move going over in the far corner to put Lutterworth back into the lead. As in the first half the difficult conversion from this position was not successful. Chesterfield began to subtly modify their game plan in an attempt to break the Lutterworth defence putting Lutterworth under even more pressure, if that were possible, and with just over 10 minutes of the half gone third phase ball from a tap penalty on the Lutterworth 22 saw Luke Cocking going over the line under the post to give a simple conversion attempt that wasTaken. The task ahead for Lutterworth was made that much more difficult when straight from the restart a blind side break by Joshua Paddock resulted in a touch down under the posts that was again converted. Chesterfield managed to put in 2 more tries both by Calum Draycote one being converted before the end of the match resulting in a final score of 11 to 36 The Chesterfield side were one of, if not the, strongest & best disciplined opposition Lutterworth have played for the last couple of seasons
