Past results against Rugby Lions
2004 -2005 13 - 12
2005 -2006 33 - 12
A very tough opening game between two very determined opponents. A dry sunny day what more can you ask for at the start of the season? Lutterworth RFC kept Rugby Lions deep in their own half right from the start. Although Rugby looked the heavier pack it was Lutterworth who won the majority of scrums and line outs. The first scrum of the day was won by Lutts and from that moment the constant pressure finally told when Mikey Ingham powered his way through to open the score, the conversion proved too difficult but the lead looked a good one to build on. Lutterworth forwards got their reward again after 18 minutes when Hargreaves broke away and had tremendous support from the forwards the move was set and a series of 5 passes resulted in Barney Barker crossing the line in the corner scoring Lutts second try of the day Bruce made no mistake this time with the conversion making the score 12 – 0 at half time. Lutterworth had a squad of 33 players available for this game so with many changes the pattern of play was sure to change Rugby Lions on the other hand only had 4 replacements although tired they continued too make a good fight of it. Lions got some reward when a series of penalties and advantages gave them some good ground and their hard work resulted in them going over in the corner to get their try 12 – 5.
Yours truly had to leave the ground after 50 minutes so Paul Rayner took over the News report!
Rugby Lions maintained their sustained offensive, Lutterworth were for the last ten minutes pegged back on their own 22, during this period Lions very nearly scored with only a very determined effort from Lutts 15 man defence holding them off. Lutterworth cleared their lines and the final passage of play resulted in a Ryan Bruce kick ending the days proceedings. A very hard game to start with played in a very good spirit with Lions playing their part in it right to the end.
Coaches Comments:
' Good starter but please, please remember that on the pitch you are one team of 15 not 15 individuals play as a team and the results will keep coming.'
