Under 15 Match Report

SUNDAY 5th November  2006

Old Northamptonians 20pts  V   Lutterworth 5pts

Overpowered and outplayed

Lutterworth were under the cosh for most of the first half with Old Northamptonians playing
with a strong wind behind them and that together with a much bigger pack proved very difficult
for the Lutterworth squad. It did take however 25 minutes before the hosts took the lead, a scrum
was won and Sam Heygate barged his way through the Lutterworth defence to score the first try
of the game and to convert as well making the score 7 – 0. Old Northamptonians now had the
momentum and their speedy winger Moyo Segum flew down the wing to score in the corner.
Just before the half time whistle Lutterworth were penalised, and the following penalty was kicked
by Heygate making the score 15 – 0 at half time.
With the sun at their backs and the wind behind them the Lutterworth team started to provide a
sterner test for the Old Northamptonians lads. Lutterworth were pressed into their own 22 and
resisted three or more strong attacks from Old Northamptonians. Eventually, after strong forward
pressure pulling in many of the Lutts players, the ball was spun wide by Old Northamptonians and
Sam Collins crossed the line in the corner. The kick proved too difficult for Sam Heygate who had
otherwise been kicking well. Old Northamptonains 20 Lutts 0. During the conversion attempt the
Lutterworth lads got together under the posts and whatever Dan said to the team seemed to work -
they charged up the field from the kick -off and started to put a bit of pressure on the Old Northampton
line. A scrum was given to Lutts in the centre of the field and some very determined running by
Bam saw him nearly cross the line - great support work from Alex Vostanis, Calum McDougall and
Mickey Ingham in driving him forward. Old Northamptonains were then given a defensive 5 metre
scrum. The Lutts pack put in a tremendous effort and drove the otherwise dominant Old Northampton
pack off their own ball. The ball was collected by the Lutts back row, picked up by Josh Connor who
showed great strength and character to fall over the line for a try.     In the absence of Ryan Bruce
kicking duties fell to Dan Thacker who attempted a drop-kick that fell slightly short of the posts.
Old Northamptonains 20 Lutts 5. Following the Northampton kick-off Lutts found themselves
under pressure again in their own 22 and only some determined defending and strong tackles
from Dann, Thacker and good team work from the forwards prevented another try as the Old
Northamptonains found themselves held up yet again over the Lutts try line. Overall the result
was a fair reflection of the game, with Old Northamptonains dominating large parts of it. We all
hope that Ryan and Joe recover quickly from the knocks they took in the game. Thanks to Bodger
for injecting a bit of comedy into the morning. Although he didn't manage to keep his shorts on
during the warm-up, he did manage to keep them on (up?) during the game.

Man of the Match:     Backs: Dan Thacker tremendous tackling.

Forwards: Josh Connor strong and cool under duress.

PS
Just to let you know, Joe Leeks, Ryan Bruce and Ben Stone are all home and recovering. Ryan and Ben have had concussion and Joe Leeks badly bruised neck fortunately no break.
All their parents say a big thank you to you all for your concern,
