Clonmell Cup - Final
Lutterworth 2nds 41pts v Rugby St Andrews 0pts
Lutterworth’s Second XV rounded off a fine season with a resounding win in the final of the Clonmell Cup, the Rugby and District 2nd team competition, played at Rugby Lions ground last Sunday. Although it was truly a team victory, there were some outstanding individual performances. Dan Ford’s pace was impressive throughout and Dave Stannard was unstoppable in the centre. Steve Lamb’s impressive work-rate in the back row stifled many opposition efforts. Andy Burgess bossed the game throughout at fly half and with a try, four conversions and a penalty bagged a personal tally of sixteen points. His half back partner Sean Van Heerdon also put in a fine performance in his farewell game before returning to South Africa.
Lutterworth started like a train with a try from Ford in the first minute and the game was as good as won by half time with further tries from Stannard, Lamb and a second from Ford. The Andrews never gave up, even spurning a kickable penalty in the second half in their attempt to cross the line but the Lutterworth defence was tested at times but never breached. Second half tries from Husthwaite and Burgess sealed the win
