League Fixture
LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 33 v GLOSSOP 1st XV: 8
Lutterworth notched up their third league win in a row over a disappointing Glossop fifteen who could find no answers to the immense superiority of the home side’s pack.
An early try by the visitors that owed much to sloppy defence and missed tackles was the wake up call that Lutterworth needed and shortly afterwards skipper, Dennis Hall, carried the ball over from the back of a five metre penalty scrum. The Lutterworth pack, led by the indomitable front row of Paul Wilford, Alan Johnson and Marcus Stevens, made mincemeat of the opposition and it was no surprise when Johnson touched down from a driving maul set from a penalty derived lineout. The third try was an individual piece of brilliance by centre, Morne Barnado, who surged and dummied his way through the Glossop defence but as with all things, this move started when the forwards took a scrum against the head on the half way line.
The half time score of 21 to 8 looked like a prelude to another fifty pointer for the home side but despite the continuing scrummaging lesson being handed out to the visitors during the second period, Lutterworth failed to hammer home their massive advantage. Although adding two more tries, the first coming again from a penalty lineout run in by scrum half, Adam Higgins and the second a well taken interception and dash for the line by winger, Ben Stretton, Lutterworth were frustrated and disrupted by the spoiling offside game that was Glossop’s only reply. Even though this was a solid and welcome victory it could have been so much more, an opportunity to display their undoubted rugby skills was wasted with what ended up an adequate but, especially during the second half, scrappy performance marred by sloppy handling and poor finishing.
Scoring: 0-5, 7-5, 14-5, 14-8, 28-8, 33-8.
