SENIOR VASE COMPETITION - ROUND TWO
EVESHAM 1st XV: 5 V LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 39
Lutterworth started poorly and an over hit kick-off into touch allowed the home side to take an early lead; Evesham’s number eight broke from the resulting scrum, found himself in acres of open space and set up his winger for a well-taken try. It proved to be Evesham’s only high point of the day and woke the visitors from their torpor, they replied with five consecutive first half tries. The story doesn’t change but moves on and a scrum taken against the head opened the account for Lutterworth; number eight and new boy, Chris Gregory set off on one of his many ball carrying rampages of the afternoon, fly half, Gareth Court was on hand to link with centre, Morne Barnardo and winger, Phil Daffern finished clinically. It was that man Gregory again who set up Bobby Williams to score and convert number two. The back row were in fine form and flanker, Adam Conway crashed over for try number three after Lutterworth took another scrum against the head. A barnstorming run by lock Ben Husthwaite was well supported by winger Ben Stretton who went over in the corner and full back Jim Croucher brought the half time tally to twenty nine points completing a fine move after Bobby Williams opened up the Evesham defences.
The second period was almost inevitably an anti climax; Lutterworth added only two more scores despite their overwhelming superiority both in the loose and set piece, Evesham could only attempt to spoil, slow down and kill the ball in what had become a one sided contest. Gregory completed a fine afternoon’s work going over from a scrum that drove the home side back a full ten metres and finally the explosive Morne Barnardo carved a hole through the opposition and found Ben Stretton on hand to take the ball over for the winger’s second of the day.
Scoring: 5-0; 5-5; 5-12; 5-19; 5-24; 5-29, 5-34; 5-39.
