LUTTERWORTH  1st XV: 27pts    v  SLEAFORD 1st XV:  5pts

Playing with the strong wind, Lutterworth left the visitors floundering in the wake of an accomplished, no frills first half performance and a lead of twenty two to nil. The Lutterworth pack as formidable as ever has been further enhanced by the addition of a genuine open-side flanker, Geraint Davies. It is no coincidence that since his inclusion combined with the rapier-like pass of new scrum half, Will Newman, the back line are now getting the quick ball and service they deserve. Newman set up winger, Dave Simpkin who seemed to almost surprise himself wriggling over for the first try after only five minutes.  Fifteen minutes later a desperate clearance kick by Sleaford was gratefully accepted by full back Charlie Roberson who with the aid of his famous fearsome hand-off charged forward and off loaded the ball neatly to closely supporting Jim Croucher who went over for number two.  Bobby Williams again kicked clinically all afternoon and made easy meat of a penalty attempt, increasing the lead to fifteen to nil. The final score of the half was pure forward power and precision, a fifteen yard driving maul allowed scrum half Newman to rifle the ball out to lock, Ben Husthwaite, standing out in his preferred position among the backs he crashed over for a try duly converted by Williams taking the first half tally to twenty two unanswered points.

In the second period Sleaford now with the wind at their back began to look dangerous, putting together some good attacking phases culminating in a fine try from their full back, Tom Collyer. Chased and eventually felled on the junction of the touch and try line by Lutterworth centre, Morne Barnardo, Collyer did well to touch down for the visitors’ consolation try. Lutterworth determined not to lose the second half responded as is now expected with another awesome scrummage, driving over the try line letting number eight and Captain, Dennis Hall hammer in the final nail.

Next Saturday Lutterworth travel to Coalville for what will be their sternest test since losing to Syston in the opening game of the season.
