EDF ENERGY SENIOR VASE Round 5
DAVENTRY 1st XV: 12 V LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 8
Despite scoring the only try of the game and having another disallowed, Lutterworth failed to reach the last sixteen of the EDF Energy Senior Vase competition on a day when the visitors were greeted by another wild windy day and a pitch which bordered on the unplayable. Although it could be argued that Daventry looked the less skilled, they mastered the conditions and ground out an eventual win with a fine display of penalty kicking by their fly half.
Playing with the wind Lutterworth were pretty much in control of the game for the whole of the first period. The pace of the game dictated by the paddy field conditions was inevitably pedestrian but an opening five minutes of excellent ball retention by the Lutterworth forwards was rewarded when Bobby Williams trundled forty yards down the wing to score in the corner. After the visitors lost stand-off Gareth Court with a pulled ham string Daventry came back strongly and were denied an equaliser only by a crunching last minute tackle from centre, Morne Barnardo. Towards the end of the half Williams added three points converting a penalty but on the half time whistle Lutterworth were desperately unlucky to have what looked like a good touch down by Barnardo disallowed; the referee deemed that the ball had been held up by a Daventry defender.
The second half developed into a moribund mud-wrestling contest between the two packs punctuated by a series of penalty kicks by Daventry. They managed to convert four from five attempts assuring themselves of a place along with Syston and Leicester Forest in round six of this prestigious competition.
