League Fixture
GLOSSOP 1st XV: 17 V LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 35
Lutterworth travelled to Glossop in North Derbyshire hoping to put their mid-season wobble behind them with another win and were not disappointed. Sometimes in the past, Lutterworth’s on-field discipline has let them down but not this week. Glossop were in trouble with the referee throughout and had their number eight sin-binned and then red-carded and played the latter part of the match with only thirteen players on the pitch as a result of further sin-binning.
Although the final margin of eighteen points looks comfortable, the result was in the balance for much of the game. Glossop opened the scoring with an unconverted try in the first few minutes. The home side’s backs were always dangerous but the Lutterworth scrum was on top form with prop Paul Wilford giving his opponent an afternoon he will want to forget. Lutterworth’s forward strength paid dividends shortly afterwards with hooker Alan Johnson once again on the score-sheet to level the match at 5-5. The home side’s backs soon responded and Glossop eased ahead at 10-5. Shortly before half time Lutterworth scrum half Jez Bell broke from the back of a scrum to score a try converted by Bobby Williams and the teams changed ends with Lutterworth leading 12-10.
The Lutterworth backs tried to match their opponents after half time but gifted an interception try to their hosts which they converted to lead 17-12. Williams kicked a penalty to claw Lutterworth back to 17-15. Shortly afterwards, Will Newman, playing in the centre, used his strength of pass to put Ben Stretton in space on the wing. Stretton made his speed tell and scored a decisive try which Williams converted to give Lutterworth a 22 – 17 lead. The home side’s indiscipline soon cost them another Williams penalty and Lutterworth started to edge ahead with a 25 – 17 lead. A further forward try, this time from Ben Husthwaite extended the lead and the final try from Lutterworth’s man of the match, skipper Dennis Hall, who was a tower of strength throughout, sealed the result at 35-17.
The result keeps Lutterworth in second place in the league behind Syston.
Next Saturday Lutterworth travel to Derbyshire again to face Ashbourne in their next league fixture.
