LUTTERWORTH 1st XV: 53pts v OAKHAM 1st XV: 10pts
A hat trick of tries by Lutterworth hooker, Alan Johnson, paved the way to an emphatic victory over Midland Three new boys, Oakham. The overwhelming set piece superiority of the Lutterworth pack especially the front row of Wilford, Johnson and Stevens, resulted in a disparity which initially worked against them given a referee whose interpretation was to consistently penalise the home side. It was thus Oakham who started the better of the two sides and who took an early lead, converting one of the barrage of penalties awarded to them in the opening fifteen minutes. Lutterworth gradually began to organise themselves and were unfortunate some minutes later to concede a converted try by Oakham winger Adam Stimpson. The arguably offside winger opportunely intercepted an attacking sweep by Lutterworth and the resulting score looked like a fourteen point swing to the visitors. This was, however, Oakham’s swan song and during the next sixty minutes Lutterworth ran in nine unanswered tries.
The homes side’s revival was fittingly started by powerhouse prop, Paul Wilford who finding himself on the wing deftly collected the ball popped up to him by scrum half Adam Higgins and neatly touched down in the corner. Before half time, number eight, Dennis Hall went over from a ten metre penalty lineout, quickly followed by Johnson’s first of three.
During the second period a rampant Lutterworth overwhelmed the visitors with six tries, one more for Hall, two each for Johnson and Jim Croucher and one (at last) for winger, Phil Daffern. Although the pattern of play was founded and cemented in the continuing superiority of the Lutterworth pack, three of the tries were peaches, typified by moments of fast free flowing attacking rugby in the style now demanded by coach, Mick Welham.
